Personal statement

Kai Low holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering (Communications) from the University of Sheffield. Following his studies, he spent over a decade working in industry as a control system architect and PLC programmer, designing and delivering customised factory automation machines across sectors including packaging, biomedical assembly, electronics, and high-value manufacturing. His industrial background includes end-to-end responsibility for automation system architecture, PLC and HMI development, motion control, robotics integration, and system commissioning.

He is currently a Digital Manufacturing Engineer at NMIS, specialising in industrial connectivity, control systems, and digital integration for advanced manufacturing. His work focuses on integrating legacy and modern manufacturing equipment into robust, secure data and control architectures. His technical interests include industrial networking, sensor and energy metering integration, data acquisition pipelines, and scalable digital manufacturing platforms, alongside emerging digitalisation themes such as federated digital twins, dataspaces, and Digital Product Passports.

The digital element of the project brings together data from key forging assets, including presses, furnaces and material handling systems, within a single platform. It focuses on establishing reliable data acquisition and visualisation to support improved understanding of forging operations and system integration. This capability provides a practical environment for developing and testing digital connectivity approaches, supporting ongoing research and capability development at AFRC.
